Navigating the Road Ahead Transportation & Logistics in WB Countries - project within the RECONOMY Programme
The joint project between the RECONOMY program, facilitated by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation, and the Volvo Group aims to address skills development in the trucking industry in the Western Balkans. This project focuses on enhancing vocational education and training (VET) to produce skilled mechatronics in the trucking industry, initially targeting Serbia, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The collaboration leverages Volvo’s expertise and resources to improve the employability of women, youth, and disadvantaged groups by introducing a non-formal training for specialization in mechatronics for heavy-duty industrial equipment and commercial vehicles in selected VET schools, followed by a gradual introduction in the formal VET curricula.
To regionalize the Navigating the Road Ahead Transportation & Logistics in WB Countries project, it is essential to establish qualification/occupational standards and curricula in mechatronics, specifically tailored to the trucking industry across the Western Balkans. These standards, recognized at both national and regional levels, will provide a unified approach to vocational education and training (VET), ensuring that the skills and competencies taught meet industry needs and facilitate the recognition of qualifications and workforce mobility within the region.

The Specialist for mechatronics of trucks and heavy vehicles regional qualification standard was developed within the Navigating the Road Ahead Transportation & Logistics in WB Countries – a project within the RECONOMY programme. The standard was developed by education experts of the VET and qualification agencies from six Western Balkan economies and mechanical and electrical sectors experts, engineers from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, Republic of North Macedonia and Serbia.
